A client told me once to add "What do you fight about?" to my list of questions for homeowners. For some families, it's the need to protect the late sleepers from the banging and clanging of the early risers. For others, it's the need to find a solitary place to get some evening work done or a sunny spot to enjoy lunch.

Whether it's a deep energy retrofit or a new home built to Passive House standards, I love most of the process: the winding way we discover together what will really make a project sing. I relish the problems we can solve with a small addition or a second story, a new porch or a gut rehab. If you've also got a failing boiler or a basement that's never been useful, you’ve got a real challenge I'd love to dig into.

I started interning with Graphite Studio my senior year of college while attending The University of Massachusetts - Amherst. I am excited to join the team full-time as a Junior Designer and engage in the world of architecture!

The field combines analytical thinking with creativity and finding the balance. If you can dream it, there's a way to make it work. I love that each part of the process is a puzzle piece to a bigger picture. Although some pieces are harder to place than others, when it comes together at the end, it is the most rewarding feeling to have made someone a home rather than just a house.

My favorite part is interacting with clients and utilizing my minor in psychology to understand what people need/want in a space in regards to their lifestyle and individual personalities.

Let's get out the pencil and paper and get designing!

Anita Ghorbani, Assoc. AIA

I started my journey with Graphite Studio during my first semester in my second year of the Master of Architecture program at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and I'm thrilled to now be a full-time designer on the team.

What excites me most about this role is the opportunity to engage directly with clients, understanding their needs and desires for their spaces. This understanding is pivotal in tailoring beautiful environments that reflect each client's lifestyle and personality.

The field of architecture continues to intrigue me. There is a unique satisfaction in creating homes where people can feel safe and valued—a place for meeting with loved ones. The idea that any goal may be realized via creative thinking is truly encouraging. My work encompasses many aspects of the architectural process, from collaborating with clients and establishing initial concepts to refining drawings in CAD for construction and, finally, seeing these plans become a reality. I've learned a great deal and thoroughly enjoy working with clients to bring their visions of beautiful homes to life.

JJ Yoo

My journey in architecture began with a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Architecture from the University of Michigan. Originally from Korea, I grew up in Michigan and have had the opportunity to work in Texas, New York, and Singapore, gaining a diverse perspective on design.

With experience in multifamily residential and office spaces, including the iconic 50 Hudson Yards in New York, I understand the profound impact of thoughtful design on our daily lives. I’m particularly drawn to the nuances of space—how details, like the height of a ledge or the presence of light, can transform our experience within it. I believe that architecture is more than just functional design; it’s about crafting environments that evoke emotions and foster connections.

I find immense joy in collaborating with you and helping you envision sustainable living spaces that reflect your values and lifestyles.

Shay Behnamfar

I’m currently in my second year of the Master of Architecture program at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where I’m exploring my passion for design. As an intern At Graphite Studio, I’ve had the chance to learn BEAM software, which helps our team perform carbon calculations to ensure our projects are environmentally conscious.

What excites me most about architecture is the opportunity to create spaces where people can truly live and thrive. I believe that thoughtful design can enhance well-being and foster genuine connections within communities. My favorite part of the design process is getting to know clients and understanding their needs, so I can turn their visions into practical and creative solutions.

I’m eager to contribute to projects that are not only visually appealing but also meaningful and functional. I look forward to shaping environments that enrich the lives of those who use them, making every space a place where people feel at home.

Oreo

Woof. Oreo is our office’s discerning canine overseer, known for his judgmental gaze and unwavering commitment to productivity. He frequently checks in to ensure everyone has completed their time sheets, and he won’t hesitate to express his discontent if you forget to give him head rubs or snacks. This charming pup is compensated with treats, making him the happiest (and most demanding) member of our team!
